Some Wii U owners are having issues when buying an external hard drive to use in conjunction with the Wii U.
What happens is that the console freezes when the HD is connected, or simply doesn't read the data on the device.
The cause
The cause of this trouble is the architecture of the Wii U.
Nintendo designed the console to make a most efficiently use of electrical energy. So, the Wii U uses less energy than others consoles to work.
Just for comparison, the Wii U can work with just half energy than that which the PS3 or the Xbox 360 need in order to work!
The external HD which don't have its own energy font will need to use the energy of the Wii U to work. This is why the console ends freezing: It can't provide enough energy for the HD to work.
The solution
In order to solve this problem, there are two alternatives:
1 - Purchase a external HD with a self energy font.
2 - Using a cable "Y", which contains 3 points, two of them USB and the other in the format of your hard drive device output. With this cable, simply connect the two on the two USB ports behind the Wii U and problem solved!
The HD will have enough energy to work and will no longer crash when exchanging data with the Wii U!
I hope that the tip can be of help.
